Reel - Discussion questions (episode 16)

To End All Wars

Forgiveness is one of the central themes in To End All Wars. In the film, Captain Gordon and British POW Dusty Miller refuse to stoop to the level of their enemies and choose instead to show grace and mercy to those who have mistreated them so terribly.

·        Read Luke 6: 27-36. How does this Scripture relate to the film and, in particular, the characters Captain Gordon and Dusty Miller?

In stark contrast to the men above, Major Ian Campbell is consumed with hatred for his Japanese oppressors and wants to extract revenge for the suffering that he and his fellow POW have experienced at their hands.

·        Read Romans 12: 17 – 21. What does this Scripture say about revenge and treatment of those who have wronged us?

Extreme Days

·        The film Extreme Days offers insight in the lives of young, contemporary Christians and provides discussion of Godliness and virtue without sermonising. How might this film be used as an evangelical tool?

The Sound Of Music

In the film, Captain von Trapp refuses to join the Nazi Party despite considerable pressure for him to accept a position in the Third Reich’s naval forces. Moreover, he does not follow the example of some of his fellow Austrians who betray their homeland and succumb to the Nazi influence.

·        As Christians we also face pressure from the world to conform to its expectations and accept things we know to be wrong. What can we learn from Captain von Trapp’s stand against the Nazis?

·        Consider the song “Climb Every Mountain”. The Bible offers advice on how to overcome obstacles or ‘mountains’ in our lives. Read Matthew 17: 20-21. According to this Scripture what is needed in order to overcome the difficulties that we face in life?
