Pedro Fernandez de Quiros 400th anniversary

Sunday the 14th May marks the 400th anniversary of a significant proclamation made by Pedro Fernandez de Quiros. On this day in 1606, he boldly proclaimed that all lands to the south of where he stood on an island in the New Hebrides, (now Vanuatu) would be the Great Southland of the Holy Spirit.

Before Captain Cook discovered the coastline of Australia, de Quiros, a Portuguese navigator, was part of a team of explorers that believed there was a large undiscovered continent in the south (Australia). When his party ran into trouble in the New Hebrides, de Quiros set up a small colony on the island of ‘La Australia del Espiritu Santu.’ It was on this island, on Pentecost Sunday 14th May 1606, that de Quiros made an official proclamation. He claimed all the land to the south for the King of Spain and the Catholic church, but most significantly, for the Holy Spirit.

De Quiros did not know what lay ahead for the people of these lands, or the generations that would follow but the truth and power of his declaration is one that God has faithfully honoured.

Pedro de Quiros’s declaration is a part of Australia’s special Godly heritage. We are a unique, culturally diverse nation and, despite the many trials and hardships we have experienced, we continue to be a blessed nation.

This month we remember and recognise the significance of the 400th anniversary of Pedro de Quiros’s proclamation over our nation. Join us as we pray in agreement that Australia will forever be the Great Southland of the Holy Spirit.
