Homosexual TV Station launched
France’s first gay and lesbian television station began broadcasting on Monday. Pink TV is largely financed by the three existing commercial networks and intends to target viewers with high incomes and no dependents by using a mix of respectable programs and homosexual pornography.
The station is partly owned by CEO Pascal Houzelot, who worked with Jacques Chirac before he became president. Houzelot is also a former executive with France’s top TV network, TF12. Owners have a budget of 12 million euros and hope to sign up 180,000 subscribers within two years. Pink TV’s advertising manager, Olivier Cariou said the channel is ‘being seen as something urban, trendy and hip.’
Canada’s Pridevision and Italy’s Gay TV continue to struggle in their quest to attract viewers, while Logo – a station also aimed at the homosexual market – is due to being broadcasting in the US in March.
Management staff at Pink TV say the increasing acceptance of the gay lifestyle in France and across Europe indicates the time is right to launch such a venture.
